Nursery News from the Nursery
There are times when our nursery stocked with plants becomes a nursery full of babies and assorted animals. This spring, nesting doves have once again found sanctuary in plants and displays and most recently baby opossums were rescued.
Unfortunately the mother opossum was already dead when she was found by staff members. The corpse was covered in ants and nearly on its way to the dumpster when the newly born babies were discovered. Kind-hearted employees struggled to remove the babies from the mother, rinsed them of ants and put them in cloths to stay warm. The efforts of volunteers from Project Wildlife were much appreciated as they arrived quickly to get the orphans fed and sheltered. We can’t provide any information regarding the mother’s fate but surmise she was either hit by a car or attacked by a coyote.
